VERSION 29
Business Central version 29 has been released and the update will land in your environment over the next few months. Microsoft has collected 80 new and updated features in the first update of 2026 release wave 2.
Some of them already came along the way in version 28, others are still in preview. Finally, we look at what Microsoft showed about Copilot at the Directions EMEA partner conference in Paris.
This article is written for you to decide when to update and what to use: what's new in 29.0, what to check before the update, and what's to come later.
Perhaps you have already received the message in the administration center that update 29.0 is ready. It can be planned for a date that suits you, and the period until that is five months.
Briefly, Business Central contains version 29 according to Microsoft 80 new and updated functions spread over 13 areas. Most are about agents, reports and development. Existing customers can schedule the update to an optional date within five months, and the period ends in February 2027.
Below we review what's new in 29.0, what came with the updates along the way in version 28, and what's still coming. If you want an overview of what the update means for your own setup, yours can Business Central consultant help.
When should we update?
New customers get version 29.0 from the start. Existing customers will be notified when the update is ready and the administrator can schedule it to any date within the five months. If you run Business Central on-premises, you must be on at least version 25, before you can upgrade to 29.
Microsoft has also changed how the news is announced. As of September 2026, Microsoft is no longer releasing release plans for Business Central. New functions are instead added to Microsoft's AI at Work roadmap.
Check the integrations first
Do any of your integrations retrieve data from Business Central via SOAP web services on Microsoft's standard pages?
With 29.0, the function is “Disable SOAP web services on Microsoft UI pages” became mandatory. This means that Microsoft's own pages can no longer be exhibited as SOAP web services. Microsoft instead recommends the built-in APIs, OData V4 or a copy of the page in a customized extension, which can then be exhibited via SOAP. In version 30.0, Microsoft removes support completely.
Four other functions will also be mandatory in the Danish version. This applies to standard values in financial reports, new texts for reminders, manual departure without picking and support for masking sensitive data in the user interface.
The agents get one common place
The largest group of news for users is about agents. IN 29.0 the tasks from all agents are collected in one task pane, and content created by an agent, can be reviewed directly on that page, where it says. Lists show a message, when an agent has actions waiting for review. And asks an agent more rights, an administrator can give them there.
Payables Agent has become better at matching invoices with purchase orders. Through the MCP server, which is based on an open standard for connecting AI tools to systems, an agent can now define, control and run queries on data, for which there is no API.
The Copilot chat in Business Central will have the same structure as Microsoft Copilot in the rest of Microsoft 365. It is in preview in 29.0.
Who among you will review what the agents do once they are up and running?
It came along the way in version 28
Several agent features Microsoft posted on the roadmap in October have actually been released since the spring and summer in the ongoing updates of version 28. We wrote about version 28 itself in our review of version 28.
- Payables Agent can be tried on 50 invoices without using Copilot credits. The test requires no administrator and no email setup, because you upload invoice PDFs directly. After the 50 invoices, the agent continues and begins using credits
- Known senders lets the administrator decide which emails Payables Agent can process without human approval and which ones to skip
- The MCP Server can make all Microsoft default APIs and API queries available to agents
- Several Sales Order Agents in the same company, each with its own mailbox, its own rules and its own key figures. The agent also finds items based on item number, supplier's item number, GTIN and cross-references before searching for properties
According to Microsoft's overview of languages, updated October 1, 2026, supports Payables Agent, Sales Order Agent and Expense Agent Danish. The Payables Agent setup guide however, only mentions English as validated, so it is worth testing the agent on your own invoices before it is put into operation.
Document reports in Word
The Word add-in for document reports is updated with finished building blocks for e.g. addresses, amounts, signature lines and notes. Reports can get themes, headers and footers can be reused across reports, and content can be hidden according to rules. The new experience must be turned on in the function control, where it is called “New Document Report Experience”.
For economics, several financial reports can be combined into one report package, which runs immediately or according to a plan, and the result comes as one PDF in the report inbox or by email. Changes in financial reports will now be always logged, and you can see, which financial reports a financial account is included in. New APIs for report inbox enables reports to be automated with Power Automate or MCP.
Production, storage and e-commerce
In production follows instructions and attachments for subcontractors with over to the purchase order, and the setup of subcontracting is made easier with guidance and warnings about lack of setup. The extension to quality management requires less manual work during inspections. The module for sustainability can now also calculate CO2 footprint for fixed assets and via product drafts. And the Shopify connector handles B2B companies, catalogs and prices on all Shopify subscriptions.
Then there are the little things in everyday life. Images can be viewed directly in the web client without being brought down, and posts show those records, the individual user has used recently.
It's still on its way
Some of the news in 29.0 is in preview and will only be released later, according to Microsoft's roadmap. Expense Agent gets, among other things approvals with AI, where reports are checked against policies written in plain language, and automatic calculation of VAT. Both are scheduled for release in December 2026. Calculation of multiple excise duties on the same item, e.g. both plastic and sugar tax, and number series per supplier by self-invoicing is scheduled for January 2027. Exchange of EDI documents through E-documents is scheduled for April 2027.
Outside of 29.0, Microsoft has announced built-in mirroring Business Central data to Microsoft Fabric, with preview in November 2026 and release in April 2027. Payables Agent must also be able to process credit notes as of November 2026. The dates on the road folder may move.
The full list of all 80 functions is in Microsoft's overview What's new or changed in Business Central 2026 release wave 2 on Microsoft Learn. Our review covers the points that affect the most users.
Which of your processes are already on the list of things you would like to make easier? That's probably where version 29 is worth reading the most.
Microsoft showed that in Paris
At the Directions EMEA partner conference in Paris at the end of October 2026, Microsoft showed where Copilot in Business Central is headed. In short, Copilot must also be able to perform tasks in the system.
With Edit with Copilot copilot can create, correct and delete records and run actions such as posting an order. This is done based on a message in plain language. Copilot works with the user's own rights, always asks before deleting anything, and then displays a log of the changes. So far, only partners can try the feature, in test environments and in English. Microsoft is planning a public preview in April 2027.
Microsoft also presented business skills. Here the company describes its own procedures and rules in plain language, so Copilot and the agents work according to them. Partners will be granted entry in November 2026 and the public preview is scheduled for April 2027.
From 1 January 2027, Business Central can purchased together with Microsoft 365 Copilot Business in one package for companies with up to 300 users. The list price is 95 dollars for the package of Essentials and 125 dollars with Premium. Prices in local currency will arrive before then. The dates are Microsoft's plans and may move.
