Danish AI company makes access to vision correction available to everyone. OptikosPrime moves the vision test from the clinic to the pocket – when the world looks sharper with AI in hand – while bringing global health within reach in 30 seconds.
Challenge: OptikosPrime had a strong and innovative technological solution, but the existing app was characterized by a complex and unmanageable user flow, lack of guidance and weak communication, which made it difficult for users to fully benefit from the app's potential.
A global problem with a simple solution
Imagine being 12 years old and not being able to read what is written on the board in the classroom. Not because you don't want to, but because your eyes can't. And then imagine that the solution does not require a clinic, equipment or money, but simply a smartphone and 30 seconds.
That's the reality VisionCheck: an AI app that analyzes eye reflections via the smartphone camera and assesses in seconds whether the user is nearsighted, farsighted or has normal vision.
The Danish healthtech startup, OptikosPrime, based in Copenhagen, has developed a solution that moves the vision test from the clinic to the mobile phone. The mission is simple: to make access to visual health available to all – not just to those with time, advice and access.
VisionCheck makes a real difference
Vision is fundamental. It affects how we learn, work and participate in the world. Yet more than 2 billion people live with impaired vision, with almost half of them able to be helped with a simple vision test and a pair of glasses.
Access to vision correction and adjustment is still slow, expensive and geographically limited. Here, OptikosPrime has turned the entire model upside down. VisionCheck requires no special equipment and no manual tests – only pure technology and optical precision. VisionCheck is not just an app, but the result of years of research and collaboration between optometrists, AI specialists and health designers.
The solution has already been tested by more than 10,000 people worldwide and delivers over 90% accuracy.
And the results are clear where the need is greatest. In collaboration with NGOs and health authorities, VisionCheck has been implemented worldwide, and it is certainly not in all parts of the world that access to correct vision is an option.
Here, the app acts as the first line in the fight against undiscovered vision problems, and gives people a chance to act in time.
Currently, they are in the process of expanding the app to also be available to end users across Europe. This means that users can easily test their vision from home and then book an appointment for an eye test with one of their optician partners quickly and conveniently.
At the same time, they are investigating how both general practitioners and the school system can use the technology to detect vision problems in children early on: this to ensure that they get the right help before it affects their everyday life and learning:

UX design at the center: When technology meets ease of use
When OptikosPrime joined KOLLAB, they had a raw and powerful technology, but an app that did not live up to its ambition. The user flow was long, help texts were missing, and the communication in the app made the experience heavy and confusing.
The potential was enormous, but the user experience stood in the way.
Here we went into the picture. Together with a business partner, we put the app in the hands of a wide group of test subjects – young, old, men, women and with different geographical backgrounds. Over the course of two weeks, we observed their behavior, asked questions and got honest feedback on the experience. The result was clear: the technology impressed, but the user flow itself created confusion.
Many were unsure how to take useful photos of the eyes, some repeatedly asking for help, while others frantically tapped around the screen. What everyone had in common, however, was that they saw enormous potential, ”if only it were a little easier”.
From insight to improved user experience
Those insights gave us a clear compass. We visualized the optimal flow in a clear flowchart, turned it into wireframes and then developed a prototype, which we again tested in practice. This time the difference was clear: the frustrations were gone, the user journey was smooth and the technology was allowed to shine.
With the new foundation, OptikosPrime could confidently move forward in development: knowing that they no longer risked losing users to an ill-conceived flow, and with an optimized user experience, they are now ready to scale the solution and help even more people see clear – regardless of where in the world they are.
