VITROLIFE
Vitrolife develops solutions that help parents have healthy children. This requires precision, overview, and the right data–at the right time. We have developed a specially designed system that supports embryologists in making important decisions at exactly the right time. There is no room for error here, which is why UX plays a crucial role. Everything from color choices to tab structure has been carefully selected and designed to support decisions, not replace them.
Challenge: Vitrolife lacked an intuitive, data-driven operations and decision-making system to manage complex fertility processes, leading to risk of error, lack of visibility, and inefficiency in critical clinical workflows. This hampered their ability to deliver safe, scalable treatments.
WHEN LIFE STARTS WITH A CLICK – AND VALID DATA
In the past, fertility treatment was a manual process fraught with risks–not least in the handling of eggs. With intelligent incubators and time-lapse technology, egg development can now be monitored continuously. This reduces errors, but at the same time creates a new need: the ability to present large amounts of data accurately, quickly, and in a user-friendly way.
We stepped into the family picture and designed a system that gives experts the necessary overview and ensures that decisions, such as the correct timing of relocation or freezing, are made on the basis of valid data. This increases both efficiency and the chances of successful treatment.
FORMIDABLE FLOWS AND FULL CONTROL
The system handles complex workflows with many inputs, patient pages, and statuses. To ensure that no knowledge is lost, we mapped out comprehensive user flows and focused on structure, navigation, and information display.
We created a logical and intuitive layout with tabs, grouped information, and clear transitions so that users never have any doubt about which patient they are working with. When a patient calls in, experts can quickly navigate between the right pages without losing track or making mistakes.
SO WHAT CAN THE SYSTEM ACTUALLY DO?
- Incubator overview where the user can ensure that all machines are running as they should.
- Patient overview where the user can follow the patient's treatments.
- Report module where users can build their own report templates for use in documenting actions, for example.
- Timelapse view where the user can follow how the eggs have developed over time and get recommendations for/make decisions about what to do with them.
- User and system configuration.
DESIGNED TO ADVISE
People come before technology – and this is especially true in fertility treatment. The system is therefore designed to advise and support, not to automate decisions. Every design element, from colors to terminology, has been chosen with the aim of minimizing errors and making everyday life easier for users.
The basic colors red, yellow, and green are deliberately used to create clear associations, and the system can display signals, warnings, and recommendations. However, it is still the technical experts who make the decisions; the system simply ensures that they have the best possible conditions for doing so.
RESPONSIBLE WORKING METHODS
As the system carries a great deal of responsibility, we thoroughly familiarized ourselves with the customer and the case, as we always do. It pays to do your homework thoroughly so that you have a correct understanding from the outset. We started the process by visiting Vitrolife, where we worked side by side for several days to build a solid foundation of knowledge.
Our expertise has resulted in Vitrolife now having an indispensable system that ensures that more people achieve their dream of becoming parents every day. The process of turning eggs into budding life has been made safer. The system gives experts easy access to monitor all stages and make decisions based on reliable data.
