CBS

When more than 21,000 students, 7,500 courses, and 600 teachers need to be brought together on a single platform, it requires a system that can accommodate it all. CBS wanted an e-learning system that could match the students' digital level, handle all administration, and digitize exams.

Together with KOLLAB, CBS has created a solution that brings teaching, technology, and people together.

Challenge: CBS needed to bring students, teachers, and courses together on a single digital platform, but lacked an e-learning system that could handle complex administration and digital exams while meeting expectations for a modern and user-friendly solution.

A collaboration that makes a difference

But how do you build a system that can accommodate everything at once?
That was precisely the challenge CBS faced, and that's where KOLLAB came in.

An agile approach set the pace. Along the way, ideas were discussed on whiteboards, mockups were created, features were tested in user groups, and the solution was continuously adapted. Together, and with Moodle as the foundation, CBS Learn was developed. A learning platform that is now used by over 36,000 users and handles all teaching materials at CBS:

"That's where KOLLAB helps us. By staying ahead of the curve and maintaining a very high level of quality," says Martin Tong, Program Manager and Project Manager in the IT department at CBS.

As part of the solution, KOLLAB has developed a project room module that creates the framework for both group work and self-study. At the same time, an intelligent information system ensures that teachers and students are always up to date on materials, messages, and changes.

To provide an overview of daily activities, calendar.cbs.dk has been established as a personalized and updated schedule. It integrates directly with Outlook, Google Calendar, and mobile apps, allowing users to view class times, changes, and cancellations in real time.

It is all tied together by the CBS API, a specially developed PHP application that integrates study administration, HR, Courseadmin, and e-learning. This is the foundation that enables the platform to function as a single integrated system.

Expertise, experience, and commitment

In the past, large budgets were often spent on projects that ended up delivering less value than expected. Today, CBS does things differently with a tailor-made speedboat approach: a solid core that they can continuously build on, both quickly and efficiently.

The collaboration between KOLLAB and CBS is based on many years of experience and mutual trust. CBS knows that they can adjust their course, take on more responsibility themselves, and still draw on KOLLAB when they need extra expertise:

"The collaboration is so strong that we at CBS can always step in and say that we want to do much more ourselves. Nevertheless, KOLLAB is still our permanent resource: expertise that can be called upon for tasks where they are particularly strong," they say.

The pilot project that ended in success

In 2012, CBS and KOLLAB launched a pilot project to digitize exam submissions. The experiment proved to exceed all expectations.

What started as an experiment quickly became a game changer. Now, students all over the world could submit their exams digitally, without having to show up with three printed copies under their arms.

The e-submission module connects administration, assessors, and students in a single, unified flow. Here, you can upload material, keep track of dates and deadlines, acknowledge submissions, and follow exam status.

An added bonus? Assessors don't have to deal with piles of paperwork and can find everything in one place.

Although digital submission is optional, it is quite remarkable that over 50,000 submissions have been processed through the system. This is clear evidence that the pilot project was a success.

As a side benefit, plagiarism has almost disappeared, because students know that it is extremely easy to check for plagiarism with digital submissions.
