Fabo Learning Lab

Fabo is not like most digital learning environments. As part of DanChurchAid, Learning Lab is behind an initiative that brings together more than 30 NGOs worldwide with one goal: to promote knowledge, capacity, and collaboration through digital learning.

But they weren't satisfied with a ready-made solution. They wanted control, customization, and data sovereignty in a world dominated by subscription-based SaaS products.

Visions require more than ambition—they require the right technologies and the right partners. For Learning Lab, the next step was to translate the idea of digital sovereignty and user-driven e-learning into a concrete platform that could support both growth and complexity. This became the "Fabo learning platform."

Challenge: Fabo needed an e-learning platform that could be built and further developed as a standalone product, but was limited by standard LMS solutions that did not provide sufficient freedom to experiment with learning formats, user flows, and business models.

From vision to reality with Moodle and KOLLAB

The choice fell on Moodle – e-learning's answer to WordPress. A flexible open source LMS system that KOLLAB has taken to new heights in close partnership with Learning Lab.

Together, they have developed and set up Moodle 4.4, complete with modules for quizzes, wikis, videos, and automated recertifications. This means that courses can be made mandatory once a year, and the system itself sends reminders and reports progress:

"We use Moodle as a shared platform for learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration. The platform supports dialogue and access to knowledge and is used in work on various professional topics, including sustainability and reducing food waste," explains Christoffer Bengt Meier, head of the Learning Lab.

User-friendliness has been a common thread throughout the development process. Trainers and teachers can easily build courses without any technical background, and users can navigate intuitively through their learning paths. There are even onboarding courses in Moodle on how to use Moodle:

"Moodle is part of Folkekirkens Nødhjælp's overall platform landscape for learning and knowledge sharing. The platform is integrated with Fabo and complements the existing SharePoint solution," heexplains .

What is Moodle and why is it relevant for modern businesses?

Imagine a learning universe where you have complete control over content, access, and data. Without being locked into an external provider or limited by expensive licensing models.

That is the essence of Moodle. As the world's most widely used open source LMS (Learning Management System), Moodle is a platform where organizations—from universities to businesses and NGOs—can shape their own digital learning journey.

Moodle works like WordPress, but for learning: you can customize it with modules, host it yourself, or get help from a partner like KOLLAB, and you own all your data. For businesses, this means complete flexibility—both in terms of functionality and security. It can be integrated with existing systems (such as Active Directory), automate learning processes, and scale from a few to thousands of users—all without breaking the bank.

But it doesn't stop there. Moodle makes it possible to offer learning both internally and externally – for example, onboarding new employees, training partners, or certifying suppliers. You can customize access down to the individual department, and the platform can function as an entire "academy" without having to be mixed with the company's other IT systems.

For an initiative such as Fabo, which works with many partners and is highly complex, Moodle is a strategic tool. But this applies equally to companies that want to ensure learning and compliance without compromising flexibility or data security.

Moodle is truly a digital backbone that can support the learning needs of the future.

A collaboration based on trust and timing

KOLLAB has not only provided technical assistance, but has also acted as a true partner in Fabo's digital journey. Instead of a fixed project model, the collaboration has been flexible and driven by need: "We have enjoyed a smooth collaboration for many years, where we always find that our needs are quickly taken seriously. When we have requests for new adjustments or developments, it doesn't take long before they are part of the roadmap. And if something is critical, it is handled quickly. This creates a great sense of security in our collaboration," says Christoffer Bengt Meier.

The upgrade to Moodle 4.4 was carried out in collaboration with a developer. The process was characterized by close dialogue, which supported smooth handling of the upgrade: "We greatly appreciate being able to sit physically together with the KOLLAB team during major development projects. It makes the process both faster and better – agile development in practice," points out Christoffer Bengt Meier.

It is precisely this combination that makes the collaboration so valuable.

Functionality with depth and flexibility

The system is designed to embrace both complexity and decentralization. Each organization has its own area, and users can be organized hierarchically through integration with, for example, Active Directory.

Fabos LMS supports internal courses, network-shared courses, and open resources:

"The network uses FABO as a platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing. The platform is used for communication with partners and for disseminating information and learning content across the board," says Christoffer Bengt Meier.

This culture of sharing and flexibility is a key ingredient in Fabo's success.

When quality and trust go hand in hand

Strong collaboration is evident not only at the technical level, but also in the sense of security, dedication, and high professionalism. At Learning Lab, the collaboration with KOLLAB has set a new standard for how a partnership should work:

“The technical collaboration with KOLLAB on the upgrade to Fabo 4.4 has been exemplary. Every detail was handled with great precision, and the goal was always to ensure a stable and smooth implementation. It is a pleasure to work with someone who is so committed to quality,” says Tanya Tierney, Technology Lead at Learning Lab.

These words not only emphasize satisfaction, but also testify to a collaboration that combines high technical expertise with an understanding of the organization's needs and a genuine desire to make a difference.

A model others can look up to

Fabo is a good example of how open source technology combined with strategic collaboration creates value far beyond the technical. It is not just about building a platform, but about supporting a learning culture that can grow, share, and adapt. And this is precisely where KOLLAB makes a difference: by delivering solutions that work in reality and equip organizations to be both independent and scalable.
