Fabo Learning Lab

Fabo is not like most digital learning environments. As part of Folkekirkens Nødhjælp, the Learning Lab is behind an initiative that unites more than 30 NGOs worldwide with one purpose: to promote knowledge, capacity and collaboration through digital learning.

Visions require more than ambition – they require the right technologies and the right partners. For the Learning Lab, the next step was to translate the idea of digital sovereignty and user-driven e-learning into a concrete platform that could support both growth and complexity. This became the ”Fabo learning platform”.

Challenge: Fabo needed an e-learning platform that could be built and further developed as a stand-alone product, but was limited by standard LMS solutions that did not provide sufficient freedom to experiment with learning formats, user flows and business model.

From vision to reality with Moodle and KOLLAB

The choice fell on Moodle – e-learning's response to WordPress. A flexible open source LMS system that KOLLAB has lifted to new heights in close partnership with Learning Lab.

Together they have developed and set up Moodle 4.4, complete with modules for quizzes, wikis, videos and automated re-certifications. This means that courses can be made compulsory once a year, and the system itself sends reminders and reports progress:

We use Moodle as a common platform for learning, knowledge sharing and collaboration. The platform supports dialogue and access to knowledge and is used in work with various professional themes, including sustainability and reduction of food waste,” explains Christoffer Bengt Meier, who is a leader in the Learning Lab.

Ease of use has been a common thread throughout development. Trainers and trainers can easily build courses without a technical background, and users can navigate intuitively in their learning process. Onboarding courses have even been created in Moodle on how to use Moodle:

Moodle is part of Folkekirkens Nødhjælp's overall platform landscape for learning and knowledge sharing. The platform is integrated with Fabo and complements the existing SharePoint solution,” he elaborates.

What is Moodle and why is it relevant to modern companies?

Imagine a learning universe where you have full control over content, access and data. Completely without being locked to an external supplier or limited by expensive license models.

That's the core of Moodle. As the world's most widespread open source LMS (Learning Management System), Moodle is a platform where organizations – from universities to companies and NGOs – can shape their digital learning journey themselves.

Moodle works like WordPress, just for learning: you can customize it with modules, host it yourself or get help from a partner like KOLLAB, and you own all your data. For businesses, this means full flexibility – both in terms of functionality and security. It can be integrated with existing systems (like Active Directory), automate learning processes and scale from a few to thousands of users – all this without the economy running wild.

But it doesn't stop here. Moodle makes it possible to offer learning both internally and externally – for example onboarding new employees, training partners or certification of suppliers. You can adapt the access down to the individual department, and the platform can function as a completely “academy” without having to mix it with the company's other IT systems.

For an initiative like Fabo, which works with many partners and high complexity, Moodle is a strategic tool. But this applies equally to companies that want to ensure learning and compliance without compromising on flexibility or data security.

Moodle is truly a digital spine that can support the learning needs of the future.

A collaboration based on trust and timing

KOLLAB has not only provided technical assistance, but has acted as a real partner in Fabo's digital journey. Instead of a locked-in project model, collaboration has been flexible and guided by needs: “We have had a smooth collaboration over many years, where we always find that our needs are quickly taken seriously. When we have wishes for new adjustments or developments, it doesn't take long before they are part of the roadmap. And if something is critical, it is handled quickly. This creates great security in our collaboration,” says Christoffer Bengt Meier.

The upgrade to Moodle 4.4 was realized in collaboration with a developer. The process was characterized by a close dialogue, which supported smooth handling of the upgrade: “We greatly appreciate the fact that we have been able to sit physically with the KOLLAB team during major development projects. It makes the process both faster and better – agile development in practice,” points out Christoffer Bengt Meier.

It is precisely this combination that makes the collaboration valuable.

Functionality with depth and flexibility

The system is built to embrace both complexity and decentralization. Each organization has its own area, and users can be organized hierarchically via integration with, for example, Active Directory.

Fabos LMS supports both internal courses, network-shared courses and open resources:

”In the network, FABO is used as a platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing. The platform is used for communication with partners and for dissemination of information and learning content across,” says Christoffer Bengt Meier.

That sharing culture and flexibility is a key ingredient in Fabo's success.

When quality and trust go hand in hand

A strong collaboration is felt not only at the technical level, but in the experience of security, dedication and high professionalism. At Learning Lab, the collaboration with KOLLAB has set a new standard for how a partner relationship should work:

The technical cooperation with KOLLAB regarding the upgrade to Fabo 4.4 has been exemplary. All details were handled with great precision and the aim was to constantly ensure a stable and problem-free implementation. It's a pleasure to collaborate with someone who cares so much about quality,” says Tanya Tierney, Technology Lead at Learning Lab.

These words not only emphasize satisfaction, but testify to a collaboration where high technical ability is combined with an understanding of the organization's needs and a real desire to make a difference.

A model that others can reflect themselves in

Fabo is a good example of how open source technology combined with strategic collaboration creates value far beyond the technical. It is not just about building a platform, but about supporting a learning culture that can grow, share and adapt. And this is precisely where KOLLAB makes a difference: by providing solutions that work in reality and that equip organizations to be both independent and scalable.
