SENS Innovation

When the cozy surroundings of everyday life are replaced by the white corridors of a hospital, motivation quickly declines. However, physical activity early in the course of treatment can significantly shorten the length of hospital stays, which is a benefit for both patients and the healthcare system.

Together with SENS Innovation, we have designed an app that visualizes patients' movements using data from a smart plaster. Through gamification, inactive patients become active participants in their own treatment process – one step at a time.

Challenge: SENS Innovation lacked a strategic digital solution to convert clinical activity data from their sensors into a motivating, user-centered app experience, which hampered their ability to engage patients, increase activity, and document the effectiveness of healthcare programs.

FROM THE HOSPITAL BED TO "AROS"

The desire to exercise rarely comes naturally when you have just had surgery. But motivation can be designed.

Based on data from the smart patches, we created a visual user journey that translates steps into progress. In the app, patients move through a digital version of Copenhagen or Aarhus and receive visual rewards along the way. This creates an intuitive and motivating experience that translates physical activity into visible results.

UX THAT MOVES PEOPLE

  • User-centered design
  • App with gamification adapted to hospital facilities
  • Extensive user surveys and quality assurance testing
  • Data visualized in real time and linked to specific goals
  • Making physical self-activation intuitive, manageable, and rewarding

1 MINUTE TO THE LITTLE MERMAID

Clear goals are motivating–especially when they are wrapped up in attractive, colorful visualizations.

In the app, the city's landmarks are illustrated as milestones. As the patient moves, they get closer to, for example, the Little Mermaid, the Round Tower, or Tivoli Gardens–all visualized as a route that constantly rewards progress.

4 MINUTES TO THE ROUND TOWER

GAMIFICATION IS STRATEGIC MOTIVATION

We didn't just design a beautiful app. We created a user experience based on behavioral design, research, and deep user insight.

We investigated what drives the desire to get up and move – and found that when patients cannot go out into the city, the city must come to the patients. That is why we chose to stage familiar surroundings and link them to a personalized route that provides constant feedback. The solution meets patients where they are and motivates them to take the next step.
